See the Beach Live & Stay Safe

Live looks from our local piers and coastal towns — from the Crystal Coast down to Oak Island — plus the official sources that keep you safe.

🏝️ Oak Island is a home away from home for us down the coast — miles of quiet beach, some of the best fishing in Carolina, and the friendliest folks around. And 32 miles out to sea stands Frying Pan Tower — a historic 1960s Coast Guard light station, now lovingly restored by volunteers. A bucket-list sunrise for any Carolina waterman. 🌅

Respect the Ocean 🙏

Rip currents and storms on the Crystal Coast are no joke. Always check the posted beach flags, swim near a lifeguard, never swim alone, and when a hurricane or warning is up, stay out of the water. If you're caught in a rip: don't fight it — stay calm, float, and swim parallel to the beach until you're free.

It's hurricane season (June 1 – November 30). We watch the tropics so you can too — bookmark this page and check before you head out.

“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” — Mark 4:39

🎣 What's Biting & the Lures That Work

From the Carolina surf to the Gulf and the Pacific — the fish people chase off piers and beaches, when they tend to run, and the baits and lures that get bit. Honest angler know-how, never a guarantee.

Spring–Fall · fall bull run Sep–Nov

Red Drum / Redfish

Fresh cut mullet or menhaden on a Carolina rig; live shrimp; gold spoons and soft-plastic paddletails.

Late winter–spring · structure year-round

Black Drum

Fresh dead shrimp or half a blue crab on a bottom rig, fished tight to pilings and rocks.

Spring–Fall · fall inlet run

Flounder

Live mud minnow or finger mullet on a Carolina rig; bucktail jigs tipped with Gulp! worked along the bottom.

Peak late winter–spring

Sheepshead

Fiddler crabs, sand fleas, or oysters on a small strong hook, tight to pilings. The "convict fish" — masters at stealing bait.

Late spring–early fall

Spanish Mackerel

Fast-retrieved Gotcha plugs, silver Clarkspoons behind a planer, and small shiny jigs — they chase flash.

Summer–Fall · end of the pier

King Mackerel

A live-bait "king rig": slow-float a live menhaden or bluefish with wire leader and a stinger treble. Classic pier-end fishing.

Spring & Fall · in the surf

Pompano

Sand fleas (mole crabs), fresh shrimp, or Fishbites on a two-hook dropper rig, cast into the trough.

Fall & spring runs · cool water

Striped Bass

Live or cut bunker and eels; bucktails, swimbaits, and topwater plugs at dawn and dusk.

Spring–Fall · aggressive schools

Bluefish

Cut bait on a bottom rig; metal spoons and Gotcha plugs. Use wire or heavy mono — those teeth are no joke.

Late summer–Fall runs

Spot & Croaker

Bloodworms, Fishbites, or bits of shrimp on a small two-hook bottom rig — a Carolina pier tradition and great for kids.

Warm months · FL & Gulf

Snook

Live shrimp, pilchards, or pinfish; soft-plastic jerkbaits around lights and structure. Tight rules — check FWC first.

Summer · Gulf & South Atlantic

Tarpon — the Silver King

Live crabs, mullet, or menhaden on heavy tackle; big swimbaits. Mostly catch-and-release — a fish of a lifetime.

🌊 Nature doesn't read calendars — treat seasons as a starting point, not a promise. And before you keep a fish, always check the current size & creel limits with your state's official agency (just below). Some species — snook, tarpon, redfish, stripers — are tightly regulated or catch-and-release only.

For the Locals

Why This Page Exists

“I built this for you — the surfers, the fishermen, and the families who love this coast like I do.” — David Hahn

I grew up between two homes — summers on the Crystal Coast in Atlantic Beach, NC with my mama, Anne Hahn, and Moorestown, New Jersey with my daddy, Ed Hahn. This coast raised me. As a teenager I worked years at Bert's Surf Shop — both the Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle shops — and I've loved surfing and fishing my whole life.

Some of my best memories are on the piers. My brother and I would sleep out on the old Sportsman's Pier and shark-fish all night long. I won the Spanish mackerel tournament out there. And my mama walked me down that pier more times than I can count — all the way to the circle and back.

These days I'm here in New Bern, and I still love it here in North Carolina. This page is my little gift back to the community — free, always — so you can plan your surf, your fishing, and your beach day, and get home safe when the ocean turns. To God be the glory.

🎣 In loving memory of Sportsman's Pier, Atlantic Beach — gone, but never forgotten.
